2009 Can Just Go F#%! Itself

February 25th 2009 12:54

So far this year I:

*Told my boss to fuck off and quit my job three weeks early. I was subsequently unemployed for my final month living in Melbourne. Would have been fun if I wasn't so broke after splurging most of my savings on a new Macbook.

*Lost control of my car on the Princess Highway just north of the Victorian border on my way back to Sydney. I took a left hand turn too fast, skidded and slided for about 20 metres and nearly ran into a ravine. One more metre and I would have killed myself and taken my best friend with me.

*Somehow reached Sydney in one piece, shaken and very stirred. The very night I arrived I got rear ended by a 4WD. I drive (or used to), a tiny Suzuki Swift. The impact sent me flying into the car in front of me. My car is a write-off and one week later, my back still hurts.

*Broke my brand new uninsured Macbook. $1300 to repair. And no, it's not covered by the warranty.

*Missed out on some funding for my short film. Out of 32 applications my script was shortlisted to a field of four. Three projects were given the green light. Mine was not one of them. Oh yeah, out of the four shortlisted directors, i was the only woman. So thanks anonymous government funding body. Thanks for helping to ensure that the Film industry remains the ultimate boys club.

Wake me up in 2010 please.

Hey Ruby,

I can top that!! I was fired for being to gay.. the weird thing is though, my boss, well the companies founder is the campest heterosexual man you'll ever meet. And he's got one of those masculine dykey wives. Any way, I just think-- ANYTHING YOU CAN DO, I CAN WORSER

Although, I'd never, Never, NEVER let anything bad happen to my Mac! NEVER!!!

Oh, and if it makes you feel any better I took a corner to fast spun my Mini Cooper 180degrees and hurtled the drivers side into a 6ft brick fence... I walked away (thank you airbags!), but the fence was destroyed, and the car well... probably didn't look that dissimilar to your beat up swift.

Just remember, no matter how bad it seems right now, just thank Dwakins you're not a Crazy Conservative Christian!

Dear Ruby,

It'll get better, you'll see... It takes true character to emerge from such negative happenings intact, and still manage to keep your spirits up, but I have no doubt that you'll do exactly that.

Hi alt_ed. Fired for being too gay?And here I was thinking there was a law against that sort of thing...how scary is it to lose control of your car? I don't have airbags so I know how lucky I am to to have walked away from not one, but two close calls. And yeah, I take responsibility for my poor Mac. Stupid, stupid, STUPID!

Thanks PoMo. I'm still a little down. Especially about the film funding thing. So close but so far...

Yeah, I was pretty certain there were laws about it too Rhubarb... But, apparently with the whole 'work choices' fiasco, an employer with under 100 staff can fire at will! It's just dumb when said employer says out loud in a crowded room that they want to fire you for being to gay. Like dah, how about we fire you for being to stupid!!

And yeah, loosing control of your car certainly isn't up there on my list of super fun exciting things to do lol

The best part was trying to convince Morgan to come pick me up... she thought I was pulling some elaborate hoax - hmmm now there's a thought

Was it the latest MacBook, the new shiny black ones with the glass track pad? *drooolllllll* MacBooks!

Hey, seeing's you're back from the scary south you have to come visit!! Morgan will be here from the beginning of March too

Hey that sounds like fun. Visiting I mean, not getting unfairly sacked. Good to know the legacy of Howard lives on.

It was the aluminium Mac. I haven't seen the ones with the glass track pad. Just as well i didn't buy and destroy that one then.

haha excellent.. Well I always say I live 30mins from everywhere, but I guess, really I'm about an hour and a bit north from the city.

Yeah it's Howards legacy, but um, wasn't it the FIRST THING Rudd said he was gonna get rid of? Or is it coming after the FREE COMPUTERS for students, and SUPER FAST NATION WIDE ADSL?? hahahaha Doesn't matter who you vote for, they're ultimately all dickheads!!

oh re: macbooks.. there is a new one out, and its just, well wow!!

haha Pomo... c'mon, surely you know by now I'm up for a fight hahaha

It'll probably be a very therapeutic for me... focusing all my negative energy on someone who actually deserves it -bliss-

3 out of 4 films got funding and yours was the odd one out?

thats terrible!

i hope you werent badly injured in your car accident, then we can say "at least youve got your health"!

sorry everything is going so shit . . . maybe you will win the lotto next month?

Hi Morgan. Yeah great odds unless your're the sap who misses out. But yeah, if they are only going to reject one then why bother with a shortlist? Why not just pick three straight out of the 32 and be done with it?

I'm not badly injured. The x rays came back clear and the doc thinks its just soft tissue bruising. I have to take it easy for the next few weeks which means no strenuous excercise which means I will probably put on weight. *sigh*. Yet another thing to get pissed off about.

Ruby,

Don't worry, 2009 is pretty crappy over here too. Not quite as bad for me as for you but well on its way.

Unfortunately I don't think hibernation is really an option... and fortunately there are 10 months left for 2009 to go uphill.

Bloody hell- that's a crappy bout of luck.

But here's sending you lots of sunshine and good vibes to kick some good times your way and give the bad a bright kick up the arse.

This too, will pass!

Ruby

It follows you mate.

Had one of those years in 2008 - mostly to do with family and their health.

The 'bad' Mr Nice Guy would say 'silver lining' Ruby:

i) the job sounds like it sucked and you did what you did for good reason
ii) you and your friend weren't seriously incapacitated or worse still
iii) while your little car was written off - it was someone's else's fault and I take it their insurance will take care of your bills - rather than the other way round
iv) the Macbook - well that just sucks
v) missing out on the funding may or may not be related to not being involved in the 'boys club' - so in an effort to perhaps bring a little light to that end of things - have you tried

Try Here

Or Even Here

Stick with it Ruby . . . it's true you're luck will change - ya just gotta ride it out sometimes.

Oh dear! Bad runs like the one you have just had are character building they say but who needs that kind of character building?

One of the best tips someone gave me once years ago when I was in a rut was "change the things you can change". I often say it to myself when things aren't going well.

Maybe your film will make it somewhere else. It was good enough to be shortlisted for the funding so it must be good.

Take care Ruby and take it easy!

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone. An update on the MacBook saga: Apple has offered to pay 50% of the costs. So that's something.

Wow - that does suck Ruby. Things will brighten up - everything is about balance so if the cosmic foreces dare to screw with you for ages then eventually they have to also shine on you. Perhaps the Mac could have been sitting on the back seat of the car and was damaged while being thrown around when hit from behind - this could turn into an insurance coup for you.

Nah, already tried the insurance thing. Not covered. Oh well, I'm just happy that Mac is paying half. Thanks for the beautiful words.

The Australian film industry sucks, most movies that are funded (read: all of them) don't make their money back in the end anyway.

Save yourself the effort.

Also I did tell you macbooks were cursed but you never listened, apparently.
