Amnetsy International Calls For Inquiry Into Bush Administration

January 28th 2009 08:23

I have been a supporter and advocate of Amnesty International for the last eight years and I never cease to be amazed at their dedication and tireless effort. AI has been campaigning for the closure of Guantanamo Bay since it opened in 2002 and even after a long and hard-fought victory, they are not ones to rest on their laurels. As they celebrate President Obama's executive order which will close down Guantanamo for good, they are also petitioning Obama to set up an independent inquiry into the Bush Administration's handling of the "war on terror". Specifically, they want the administration to be investigated for their detention and interrogation practices.

If you are one of the millions of people who would like to see Dick Cheney held to account for his belligerent flouting of human rights and international law, then follow this link and add your name to the petition.

Hi Morgan, they are actually calling for an independent inquiry. Non-government.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to say alt_ed...

dont make me get my inverted commas out . . . oh no . . . i just cant help it . . . an "independent" inquiry (yes ive gone a little S.L. Bradish) commissioned by government and reporting back to government might as well be performed by government employees

sorry im a bit jaded by the amazing ability of Forestry Tasmania to never break any corruption or environmental laws

I tend to agree with Morgan. It may sound negative but It will probably go nowhere.

It is good to try but even with a new administation, the new government will tread lightly when it comes to opening old wounds.

I think they just want to move forward and that isn't such a bad thing.

Ok ladies i see your point. Still, for me this is more about the efforts of AI than it is about the likelihood of such an inquiry succeeding. It's the way they don't just accept victory and lie back and congratulate themselves. Who was it that said their is never a real victory in the fight for rights, that there will always be something else to fight for? I'm sure I read words to that effect once.

Yep something needs to be done. Obama needs to look like he is distancing himself from Bush as much as possible if the US is to regain any shred of decent and moral dignity.

Love & stuff
