Firstly, I want to say that I have nothing against Cindy McCain. She seems quite lovely and I'm sure she just wants to help her husband get elected.

But really, this is just about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I can't imagine what she was thinking. There's grasping at straws and then there's the reply that Cindy McCain gave in an interview on ABC
when the reporter pointed out Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's lack of national security cred:

McCain: You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here.

Oh dear.

You are being very unfair to Governor Palin and not giving her credit for her bravery and military skills. Ask yourself this: In the two years she's been in charge of the Alaska National Guard, has there been an invasion of the U.S. by Russian troops? No. Just having her stand on the edge of the sea, shotgun in hand, has made foreigners and moose quake.

It's important to note here that it's just not Cindy McCain....this has been oft repeated and is actually a point the campaign wants to use. It would be better if it was just a ditzy remark or a goof. Did you know the Palin camp also said she has been to Europe? Turns out, she changed planes at Shannon airport on her way to the Middle East, her only overseas trip. As for Russia, the fact that a few fishing villages are close to Siberia isn't saying much. Try booking a flight from Anchorage (ANC) to Moscow (SVO) and see what comes up. You will still have to fly to the mainland US then connect through Europe.
Siberia is huge. The capital, Novosibirsk, is farther away from any ocean than I am from the beaches of Florida. (I live in the Pacific Northwest) The argument is so insipidly stupid that you wouldn't think the right would even take it up...but then again,,,,
