Fox News: Never Fair, Never Balanced

July 27th 2008 15:09
This is the transcript of part of an interview former White House spokesperson Scott McClellan gave to MSNBC's Chris Matthews:

Matthews: “Did you see FOX television as a tool when you were in the White House? As a useful avenue to get your message out?”

McClellan: “I make a distinction between the journalists and the commentators. Certainly there were commentators and other, pundits at FOX News, that were useful to the White House.” […] That was something we at the White House, yes, were doing, getting them talking points and making sure they knew where we were coming from.

Matthews: “So you were using these commentators as your spokespeople.”

McClellan: “Well, certainly.”

Q: Is that incredible?
A: Yes!
Q: Will anyone take any notice of this confession?
A: Hell No!

nice to know the government is controlling the media
nice to know the media will sacrifice its integrity to further the Republican cause

It's really chilling isn't it? I think I have been numbed or something though, normally something like this would infuriate me, now I just think oh well, you do know that's just the way the world works right?

I've been watching a little Fox this morning, it's a little Sunday morning thing for me, look at the biased crap they call news. Honestly, I think the media in Russia is more "fair and balanced" than Fox. Even when Fox is just covering stories that seem non-partisan they words they choose are so pointed. An excited voice when talking about McCain, a smirk when talking about Obama. Every few minutes they are harping about Obama not visiting "our wounded heroes" at a hospital in Germany.
And don't forget radio - Fox has big radio tentacles too, and so many people get their info in the US from talk radio. Even here in "liberal Portland" I can listen to one station with progressive hosts, at the same time I can find at least 5 stations spouting right wing rhetoric.
Still, I don't think it's an excuse - if people willfully choose ignorance they are culpable.

I guess I'll be referring to that quote whenever FOX News gets mentioned now...

We're not immune to it either.

Remember when Kerry Packer went on A Current Affair and was interviewed by Ray Martin back in 1996 and basically endorsed John Howard who was running for election.

Why would Kerry endorse Johnny? So Johnny could relax cross media ownership laws when he became PM.

Why else would Kerry be interviewed on a television show on a television station that he owned.

So blatant....

Jeff, you make me laugh. Now I will forever think of Fox as a giant squid!

Hey PoMo, it's always been obvious, but what amazes me is that they can admit it so openly.

, Wow, I don't remember that interview. That's really disturbing. And a good example for I don't put much stock in most Australian commercial news programs.

I was studying journalism at uni at the time so that interview really stuck out as I was learning about news agendas. All of a sudden I became very attuned to it.

Too frightening for words, Ruby! Fox News is our worst Orwellian nightmare come true!

You may be interested in some of the material I posted about those Fox schemers in my most recent post HERE.

Great post as always, Ruby!!

Yes, Ruby - think of Fox as squid- but not just any squid, mind you- the face of Bill O'Reilly, tentacles that each look like a different fox anchor (Sean Hannity, Brit Hume, Greta Van Susteren, E.D. Hill, etc.. With a tiny little ineffectual tentacle, the supposedly "liberal Coombs..now picture the squid swimming out of a cave that is really the bloated ass of Rupert Murdoch....that'll give ya nightmares, eh?

Totally unsurprising when it's FOX, where it gets tricky is noticing the talking points being fed to all the other news sources as well. Bush and cronies tell the media what to say, then cry about "liberal bias" to throw people off from noticing it.

Read this, I think you'll like it.

To be fair, none of the networks are entirely unbiased or balanced, at least not all the time. FOX just happens to be a particularly egregious (and none too subtle) offender. Cover up, FOX, your agenda is showing!
