Think. Think again. And then think some more.

God speed, Rev. Falwell

May 16th 2007 13:45
Well. Well well well well well. It is, as they say, the end of an era. Or possibly that is overstating the case. In all likelihood, the evangelical/political machine that Rev. Falwell helped to craft will continue to turn its gears for some time. Doubtless there are instructions in place to ensure that this is so. Still, it is most certainly the end of the bombastic, divisive Rev. Falwell himself.

And what of his passing? Does Mr. Falwell now find himself, as he obviously believed he would, sitting at the foot of the throne of God, reaping his heavenly rewards? Has his soul been called to Heaven, and is even now basking in the radiance of divine love for all eternity? It must be! After all, as he himself stated in his book, Finding Inner Peace and Strength, "The Bible is the inerrant ... word of the living God. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc."

Clearly, then, since the Bible is 100% correct, the Rev. must be enjoying paradise right now. And if he was right about that, think of all the other wonderful words he provided for us by which to live good lives:

-"AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals."

-"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country."

-"The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews."

-"I believe that global warming is a myth. And so, therefore, I have no conscience problems at all and I'm going to buy a Suburban next time. "

-"If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being."

-"Textbooks are Soviet propaganda."

And perhaps the most helpful of all:

"And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.' "

Rev. Falwell provided that last sagely comment immediately following the events of September 11th, 2001. When the country was roiling with anger and blinded by tears, he chose such perfect words, the mot juste, to help soothe our fears and cool our troubled brows. As someone who was living and working in Manhattan that day, I know that I will forever be indebted to him for the healing he provided.

Now, as a reward for all of his good works, the soul of Rev. Falwell is held closely to the bosom of the Lord. His eyes no longer have to see the hurt that he caused with his callousness and ignorance. His ears are deaf now to the anger and sadness he helped to sow through arrogant posturing and self-righteous finger-pointing. No, the Reverend's cares have all slipped away as he sinks into the oblivion of paradise.

By all means, let us never forget the wisdom and loving example of that most godly of men, the Rev. Jerry Falwell. He left us with so much.

I've never heard of Rev. Jerry Falwell before this, and based on the information provided here, I think I'm glad about that!

People like him are the ones that ruin religion for so many others - characters like his that people try to avoid.

May his heaven be a house of mirrors.

If you've somehow managed to avoid exposure to the good Rev. Falwell's charms, you didn't miss much. Obviously, though, I'm quite biased in my feelings, so don't take my word for it.
