Thought Zone - Exercise your mind....

Think. Think again. And then think some more.

Morrissey Would Be Proud Of This One

May 9th 2008 03:37
In case you thought irony was dead, here is the reason that US Defense Secretary Robert Gates cites as to why the US has yet to deliver humanitarian aid to Burma/Myanmmar:

"I cannot image us going in without the permission of the Myanmar government," Gates said at a Pentagon press conference with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen.

When the press asked whether it would be possible to bypass ground access permission and drop supplies from the air, Gates's sidekick, joint Chief of Staff Adm, Mike Mullen, piped in with this gem:

"We could. Typically, though, it's sovereign airspace and you'd need their permission to fly in that airspace...It's all tied to sovereignty, which we respect whether it's on the ground or in the air,"

Yes, everyone, the Bush Administration has nothing but respect for the sovereignty of another nation....well only when there's no oil involved.

I haven't seen any footage of this press conference but I sure am dying to know if either of these men managed to keep a straight face.

Please, please, please, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before. Sing it again Morrissey!

MORGAN! Sacrilege! You have dissed The Simths? Like a knife through my heart, i tells ya.

that song has some of my fav lyrics of all time:

I smelled the last ten seconds of life
I crashed down on the crossbar
And the pain was enough
To make a shy bald buddhist reflect
And plan a mass murder.

Louie- only you and the rest of the world! Of course, if Burma DID have oil, The US wouldn't have waited until a cyclone hit before they invaded.

Ruby, we don't invade every country that has oil! Just the ones that are going to welcome us as liberators.

To be fair, though, the real story here is not the American gov't. While our government has its faults, we would not deny our own people aid as the Myanmar government has done......

Whatever else can be said, I do think that the U.S. government's desire to send in aid is genuine. However, when the Myanmar army is seizing U.N. supply planes, it's not really going to work if we send additional aid.

Umm, okay, are you having your own ironic moment here? katrina anyone?

look I'm certainly not blaming the US Govt for the actions (inactions?), of the Burmese Govt, its just the terminology the officials chose to employ that makes me snigger.

Katrina was a colossal clusterf*ck, not willful refusal. There's a difference between mismanaging a crisis (very badly, in that case) and actively refusing aid that is being handed to you.

Not trying to quibble, but I do have to stick up for the U.S. sometimes!

Fair enough. Though i do think that had the disaster been in malibu, the aid would have been managed a lot better. But yeah, you're right.

Apparently the Burmese Govt has now seized all the aid supplies.

The mind boggles Winston. they really don't care. it's their own people, the people they are meant to be looking after and they are killing them.

Why do we continue to get surprised by stuff like this? When it happens over and over again, why do we still get shocked by how cruel people are to each other?

Hey Ruby,

The seizure of the aid supplies makes me really mad...
I think Winston has a very good point - the US can only do so much if the Myanmar govt isn't willing to work with them. Collaboration takes two.
