PETA Outdo Themselves In The Idiocy Stakes

April 9th 2009 13:19
I was pretty sure this was a joke when I first read it, but sadly its true. I say 'sadly' because despite all the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I still don't like to think that people can be this stupid.

Peta, you know that animal rights group that fights for the 'ethical treatment' of animals by by unethically treating women like meat, has asked iconic British pop duo Pet Shop Boys to change their name to Animal Shelter Boys. I kid you not. Something about the unethical and inhumane treatment of animals in pet shops yada, yada, yada. Okay I don't mean to be blase here about cruelty to animals but really, a little semblance of sanity is in order. How on earth would such a name change possibly impact on the treatment of animals in pet shops? Well apparently, in Peta's Alternate Universe it would "encourage your millions of fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from an animal shelter". Alas, in this case flattery got Peta nowhere. Millions of fans? Yeah, maybe in 1987. Who the hell gives a shit about the Pet Shop Boys anymore anyway? Oh that's right, this is less about actually changing the way humans treat animals and more about keeping Peta in the spotlight.

The musicians turned down the request and politely said that it "raised an issue worth thinking about", when what they were really thinking, "are you fucking kidding me? Could you morons be more irrelevant? And how the fuck did you get my number anyway. Security!"

Fucking hell Peta. Get a clue. Try actually doing something that you know, helps animals, instead of shamelessly seeking attention for yourselves.

Animal Shelter Boys? Only if Iron Maiden become Iron Non-Gender Specific Person, Meatloaf morphs into a Tofu Patty and Guns n Roses change their moniker to the catchy Hopefully Soon To Be Completely Banned Firearms n Non-Species Specific Flowers Of The Fragrant Variety.

My tolerance for human bullshit is at an all time low.

Animal Shelter Boys? haha

i think you hit the nail on the head when you said:

Millions of fans? Yeah, maybe in 1987. Who the hell gives a shit about the Pet Shop Boys anymore anyway?

they arent exactly a current act . . . and as if a name change would actually change attitudes

are pet shops really the crux of the animal cruelty prevention movement?

i would think pig farms and draining bile from animals etc would be a more important issue

just slap another nude woman on it PETA

They only do reconstitutions these days, don't they?

Right... and while we're at it, I think PETA should petition the government to include discrimination laws on the basis of breed; Dog's have been putting Cats down for far to long! -insert terrorist fist jab here-

Don't have heart failure, Ruby, but here is something we actually agree on. PETA lost it's so-called mind a long time ago. I thought they'd finished themselves off when they insisted we should start calling fish "sea kittens" so people would stop eating them. When there is actual brutality toward animals, however, PETA is nowhere to be found.

Oh. My. God! I never thought I would see the stars and stripes on these pages. haha. Well, it's always good to find common ground to with another person...if a little unsettling

Ruby,

I do not know much about PETA but your post is very witty indeed. Animal Shelter Boys??? Where are they coming from?

I agree that PETA is absurd, obnoxious and often counter-productive. One thing I want to point out is that they know how ridiculous requests like these are and that they have no chance of success. That's exactly why they do it -- because they know it'll turn heads. I remember when they picketed CBS because the contestants on "Survivor" ate rats to survive. PETA subscribes to the "No such things as bad press" philosophy and doesn't care that we're bagging on them, so long as we're talking about them.

It's sad that PETA is grappling over semantics of a non-relevant band just to be in the spotlight. Aren't there more productive things to do to save animals? Like raise money for no-kill shelters? Just an idea.

Spaying, neutering and no-kill shelters are excellent ideas, Kristin. Maricopa Co. AZ. has the best way of saving the animals and solving other problems as well. Sheriff Joe Arpaio trains prisoners to care for the pound animals. It gives both the prisoners and the animals a new lease on life. There are available solutions for many problems that don't require higher taxes and more government control.

Tofu is made of squished veggies- if Meatloaf did indeed become Tofu patty I bet you some extremist group out there would have a problem with that name promoting violence against veggies.

I think Peta have read too much into this one, and its sad because they get so much (negative) attention from these antics that they make other people who are pro-animal rights look wacky. Kind of like what Islamic extremists do to the rest of the Muslim population IMO.

Yep...PETA is screwy.....As for calling fish "sea kittens" probably wouldn't get much sympathy from me...I really can't stand most cats. You wouldn't believe the look you get when you see someone giving away free kittens and say "I'll take them all" and explaining that feeder mice are getting to expensive for your snake. (Kidding kitty lovers)

I actually heard a Pet Shop Boys song the other day in the middle of a radio program for the first time in about 20 years! And now I'm reading a blog post about them. Who would have thought Pet Shop Boys could make it into my life twice in the same week. And I have to say I also had the thought this week that I might go and buy myself another cat. Do you think the two are somehow related?
