SL Bradish Or Sheik Al-Hilali?

July 25th 2008 01:48

As a keen follower of world, and in particular American and Middle East politics, it is a source of amusement and bemusement to me how often I find American neo-conservatives to be very similar to radical Muslims in their opinions and rhetoric. Taking into account that it is these same conservatives who are most critical and fearful of Islam, it leaves me scratching my head and wondering –do extreme conservatives hate extremist Muslims because they are different, or because it’s almost like holding up a mirror to their own shortcomings?

Most Australian readers would probably be familiar with the name Sheik Al-Hilali. He is the former Sunni Muslim Mufti of Australia who, having elevated the status of Muslims somewhat in Australia by
flying to Iraq and helping to negotiate the release of hostage Douglas Wood,
then went and undid his own good work by giving one of the most frightful sermons I have ever heard.

I’m sure you Aussies know what I am talking about, but for my other readers he essentially likened women who did not wear the hijab and had the audacity to leave their bedrooms once in a while to “uncovered pieces of meat”.

Now, before I continue, I want to stress here that Al-Hilali’s comments were condemned by Muslims across the country who were quick to distance themselves from his opinions. They were also condemned by most of the public and the then conservative Prime Minister John Howard.

And then we have SL Bradish. Every regular Orbler will be familiar with SL. She is the resident right wing radical with whom I have clashed many a time. It’s true, I cannot stomach many of her opinions and sometimes she actually frightens me. But I have never thought her to be completely devoid of reason and empathy. Until now.

Yesterday, Morgan Bell wrote a post on her Deep Pencil blog on feminism and the many benefits it has created for women. Some of the comments SL left on that post made my skin crawl but it wasn’t until I read SL’s counter-post and the comments it attracted that I became utterly devastated that any person could actually have these thoughts and print them. But the main thing I noticed was how eerily similar her comments were to the comments of Al- Hilali.

To illustrate my point, I have compiled a little quiz I like to call SL Bradish or Sheik-Al- Hilali? Your job, dear reader is to guess who made the statement. Conservative stalwart and freedom fighter SL Bradish:

SL's profile pic

or disgraced former Mufti of Australia Sheik Al-Hilali?:

I must warn you though, the comments are deeply disturbing and an affront to both men and women everywhere. I have left the spelling mistakes and the answers are below.

1. "you can decide for yourselves how wonderful feminism has been for women and for the family unit and for the human race.

It has enabled women to become nothing more than whores (if they choose to be) who sleep around and have no responsibilities... well... except for the fatal diseases they can now freely contract from their multiple partners. It has enabled them to kill their children (wouldn't want the delicate little feminists to be tied down with children, just because they happened to get pregnant, would we?)"

2. "when it comes to adultery, it’s 90 per cent the women’s responsibility. Why? Because a woman possesses the weapon of seduction. It is she who takes off her clothes, shortens them, flirts, puts on make-up and powder and takes to the streets…Then it’s a look, then a smile, then a conversation, a greeting, then a conversation, then a date, then a meeting, then a crime, then Long Bay jail…Then you get a judge, who has no mercy, and he gives you 65 years".

3. "feminism didn't give you anything. It took away so much of your feminine qualities... Ladies aren't respected anymore. Women are considered pieces of meat because they have no mistique left. They can behave as badly as men and with as few consequences".

4. "If you take uncovered meat and put it on the street, on the pavement, in a garden, in a park or in the backyard, without a cover and the cats eat it, is it the fault of the cat or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem.

If the meat was covered, the cats wouldn’t roam around it. If the meat is inside the fridge, they won’t get it.

If the meat was in the fridge and it (the cat) smelled it, it can bang its head as much as it wants, but it’s no use.

If the woman is in her boudoir, in her house and if she’s wearing the veil and if she shows modesty, disasters don’t happen".

5. "Have you got AIDS or have you killed any of your children? If not, good for you. If so, by all means, thank feminism".

6. "Why don't you whore around awhile…and get pregnant (because birth control doesn't always work) and then kill the baby…and then catch AIDS from one of your many one night stands".

7. “Satan sees women as half his soldiers. You’re my messenger to achieve my needs. Satan tells women you’re my weapon to bring down any stubborn man. There are men that I fail with. But you’re the best of my weapons."

8. "It's passing oneself aound like a plate of goodies at a party that bothers me! The rhythm method does work, you know, by the way, if it's marriage you're talking about. It's when women screw indiscriminately… that makes me angry. What ever happened to behaving oneself? Do we all have to act like whores to be "free?"

9. “The woman was behind Satan playing a role when she disobeyed God and went out all dolled up and unveiled and made of herself palatable food that rakes and perverts would race for. She was the reason behind this sin taking place."

10. "You dress like a tramp, you act like a tramp, you sleep around like a tramp... what are you?"

11. "I unreservedly apologise to any woman who is offended by my comments."

6. Bradish
7. Al-Hilali
8. Bradish
9. Al-Hilali
10. Bradish
11. Haha. Al-Hilali of course. Bradish apologise? Not in this lifetime baby.

So how did you do? Are you as freaked out as I am?

Ruby, this post is fantastic!

How long do you think you'll last before someone leaves a comment here calling you a whore? =)

Don't get too excited though, you're not on the S.L. Bradish hit list until you receive a private message; Look here's mine...

RE: Shit Ed
Sender: S.L.
You aren't 21, you're not smart enough to have an opinion, and you like to beat up women. Try to focus here, creep. I know everything about you and you don't have a clue where I am. So you might want to shut up and back off before I notify some feminists about what you're really like. O.K. Punk?

Damn - I don't know if I know too much about them....I got 100 percent of them! I saw something that compared Osama biin Ladin with I think Pat Robertson - as it turns out, religious nutcases are religious nutcases, with little regard for anything but their own twisted mythologies...

Hey alt_ed, that message is full on. case of mistaken identity methinks. i see she has just accused you of being a woman basher on her latest post also.

Hi crackwhore, it's okay, if you O.D. or have a crack baby or have an abortion or get AIDS, just blame me. i am a feminist, therefore all the ills of the world are my fault.

Hey Jeff, yeah the quiz was pretty easy...mainly because of the language and references employed by he writers, but they are still so similar in their message right? I was just trying to highlight this and chose to do it in a light-hearted manner otherwise I think the whole thing would have been way too depressing.

Hey I know... She's really giving the slander stick a good work out today!

I've just posted on how I found her details simply using Google-- stalking s.l. bradish couldnt be easier/

I know, I know, I probably seem equally insane in this post but god, she brings out the worst in everyone doesn't she!

Hi Ruby,

This is brilliant. I particularly liked:

11. Haha. Al-Hilali of course. Bradish apologise? Not in this lifetime baby.

You are dead on.

BTW, can I blame you because I can't stop my 2 year old from getting into the DVD's? Is that a feminist issue? Does my husband need to come in with a firm hand? Is that a feminist issue?

Well done Ruby, considering the battering you got.

And alt_ed

That message is full on. Bloody hell.

Exactly, Ruby - the messages are the same, the differences are just semantics. Like the christian fundies rarely refer to Satan, usually they see liberals as the evil ones.

Hi PoMo, all you have to do is switch a few words around and they were virtually the same. Essentially, the underlying message of each is that women are to blame for sexual violence perpetrated against them.

Thanks Mrs M, yep just lay it all on me baby. Yeah, it's the apology thing that gets me the most. Maybe I am just expecting too much but after the outrage her comments caused you'd think she may have stopped to consider what she was actually saying. Morgan's blog attracts many different people with differing social and political views, it's not as if she was only preaching to far lefties and feminists. That alone, should have given Bradish pause for thought. At least Al-Hilali had that going for him. He knows when he has gone too far.

Hi Anne,
the resemblance is almost uncanny huh?

Now alt_ed
, I'm sure Bradish was not talking about me in that post. I know that because she never reads my blog. She told me so herself.

Holy shit. I've just read a couple of the various posts and now have serious doubts about SL's sanity. She seems to have completely lost her grip.

Ruby, you trollop, I'm also blaming you for late running trains. I know you're behind it all with all your wanton sex at every stop with random passers by

The statements you have quoted are so eerily similar I feel the need for a shower now *shudder*.

wow the "uncovered meat" arguments are nearly identical . . . if i had not seen the original S.L. Bradish comments as they happened i would have had difficulty discerning who was who

i dont have a problem with women covering themselves for the purposes of modesty if thats what makes them feel comfortable, but theres no need to say that if a woman doesnt want to be modest that she deserves violence as punishment

theoretically you really should be able to walk down the street naked without expecting to be sexually assaulted . . . any man that cant look at at naked woman without thinking of raping or hurting her has a severe psychological problem!

Well it seems she's making up alter ego's to back up her blogs.

I'm quite positive these two are actually her:

Comment by Fellow orbler/blogger July 24th 2008 13:50
I read both, I have to agree with you here SL. I think that femenists have gone way too far. They started out with the right ideas... but WHOA! Did they go out of hand!

Abortion is MURDER- Promiscuity (casual sex, etc) makes them nothing more than sluts- and yes, that nastiness is exactly what triggers most homicidal maniacs to hunt them down and kill them like trash... probably because if they act like this, they are.

Comment by Point proven!!! July 24th 2008 13:57
And I'm sure that it's right for a fourteen year old girl with a broken condom accident to have a kid just because her family is too lazy to get her a family doctor, right?

So I don't know what's more disturbing - SL creating fake profiles to back up her blog or her reply.

To herself....

The Political BriefHello Fello Orbler and Point Proven! Hello Fello Orbler and Point Proven! Thanks for stopping by. It's good to know that there is still some common sense in the blogisphere! Some people don't seem to realize that there's a difference between having the right to swing your fist (freedom) and punching everyone you pass on the street (license). It never fails to amaze me that feminists are so hung up on their "freedom" that they forget all about consequences...

Excellent post, Ruby! You are a very clever woman - I knew there were similarities but it is freaky how many! Take out the specific references to veils, etc, and you would never know who was who.

I never know how to react to SL's insanity. My first response is usually outrage, until laziness and a sense of futility in action come over me, and then I just have to laugh at her sheer ridiculousness.

She really is too preposterous to take seriously, but I know there are those that do, and support her wholeheartedly, so I am glad there are less lazy people - who also have a great sense of humour, like yourself and alt_ed - who are willing to take her on.

It's fantastic to witness!

I hope that I'm not too late to add my two cents in.

Although a father of four daughters, I had hesitated to jump into this discussion on feminism which was being treated fairly and appropriately by Ruby and many others. Most of you know how I feel about SL and her opinions and limited language skills and I felt that whatever I added would be redundant.

SL's post are like an accident on the side of the road. People driving by have a compulsion to slow down and look at the carnage in the knowledge that it will be unpleasant. Still we do it.

Congratulations on a well researched and meaningful post.

Hi Cheryl, not only am i to blame for the late running trains but if you have been on the M5 on a Friday afternoon and have not moved for over an hour...well that is me having sex with random motorists in the tunnel. Thought I may as well fess up now that my whorish behaviour is out in the open .

Hey Morgan, yeah it was the "meat" statements that Bradish made that reminded me of Hilali but when I went back and read his sermon the similarity that struck me most was how Bradish referred to women passing themselves around like a "plate of goodies" and he said that women make themselves "palatable food". It really got my stomach churning. Now I know Bradish would not be reading Hilali in her spare time which means they both reached these conclusions separately, which tells me there is seriously something wrong in our world culture, where schools of thought which are meant to be world's apart can both hold women in such low esteem.

Hi JohnDoe. Morgan's right, Damo hates me. Oh well. I'd like to say that bothers me...but it doesn't

Hi Anna, yeah I thought those two comments you quoted were a bit suss but did not include them in my post as I cannot prove it was her so it would only have been conjecture. But if not her it was most likely one of her cronies. Actually it was that first quote, by felloworbler/blogger that really felt like a kick in the guts when i read it. Basically saying that women get raped and killed because they are tramps and who can blame the men for doing it? And then she congratulates the writer on their common sense. Astounding.

Thanks Michaelie, I'm with you, I have thought Bradish too ridiculous to take seriously for a long time and was always surprised that people did so, but these latest comments I could not let slide. The rights of women is the issue that is closest to my heart and I just couldn't believe the things that were being said. Al-Hilali was vilified for his statements and rightly so. The incident led to more anti-Muslim sentiment in Australia and people put it down to those "crazy, backward Muslims". But actually, hang on a minute here, here is a white, western woman saying the exact same thing and getting compliments from other people for her point of view. It's just not right.

Thanks Jim, and thanks for giving me a plug on your blog.

And thanks Chris and Janet, I do put a lot of effort into researching my posts, glad to see that it is time well spent.

Thanks to everyone for reading and commenting. I have just noticed that this post, along with all the other posts that mention Bradish by name, has been removed from the Orble home page.

And yet, her post where she calls me "a pathetic waste of space and air", is still there for all to see. That is also the post where she blames me and other feminists for everything from AIDS to abortion to rape and murder.

I honestly do not understand the world sometimes.

Well considering that my post on Paul Weller that has half this amount of comments and votes (and that I wrote BEFORE this), is still there AND that all the other SL posts have also disappeared too I can only conclude that Orble has removed them..Amazing isn't it? Who would have thought that criticising another blogger will get you censored?

Censorship: It's as easy as SLB.

I'm pretty pissed off. I just posted on writer's forum asking them what's up but they won't put that article up there either.

Amazing. The Orbler with the most toxic comments is allowed to continue and the rest of us are marginalised. I am honestly stunned.

I think we at least deserve an explanation.

writers forum usually takes a few days to be approved, they might get to it on monday . . . sometimes i find they approve it and answer it within 20 seconds of each other so i presume they dont press the "approve" button until they have devised their response

Ruby, my original feminist post is still at the top and i wrote that like 4 days ago . . . i definately dont think this post has "fallen off" due to lack of clicks

i can also think of at least 5 posts that have been written directly about you which were allowed to sit in the popular post list without censorship at any one time

You know what pisses me off Morgan? That Orble removed my post without even reading it. They would have assumed that because I mentioned another writer's name that I was just slagging her off. This is a political post about political writing. One of the writer's I discussed happened to be a fellow Orbler. I wasn't just trading insults. I was actually attempting to de-construct and contextualise her work. If people can't tell the difference between that and simply trading insults then that is an unfortunate indication of the lack of intellectual integrity around. I also notice that Lester's post where he calls homosexuals disgusting sinners and perverts is in the most popular list.

Seriously WTF???

This post took me four hours to put together. I'm so angry right now.

Rupert Murdoch isn't involved with Orble, is he? Seriously, the only thing that should be censored at an online forum is personal information put out. No writer should be able to publish anything that could take the online attacks into the "real world." Other than that, they should leave it alone.
