Super Powers or Super Fame: Which Would You Choose?

July 11th 2007 21:32
OK, today is a day for some fun mental recess. I see lots of these survey type questions on Orble, and I admit that I'm a sucker for them myself, so here goes:

If a genie popped out of a lamp and offered you your choice between: a) having a superpower, such as flight, super strength, etc. to use for the benefit of humankind but no one could ever know about it or, b) the love and admiration of the world (and the perks and riches that go with those things), on the condition that you've done nothing to earn it and you can only use that fame and riches for yourself, which would you choose and why? I reserve the right to question all answers.

To sum up again, choice a) gives you awesome powers and the responsibility to aid humanity without reward, while choice b) gives you all the fame and respect lacking from the first choice, but no means of actually doing any good.

The person with the best answer and defense of their answer gets to rub lamps until they find a genie!

**NOTE** I have changed the verbiage here slightly since katyzzz's answer, because I realized I left out an important aspect of my question

I'd choose B. That way I could have the pleasure of distributing the benefits of my bequest for the benefit of humankind, wherever and in what ways I'd please.

I'd also be able to police such activities to ensure the money was spent wisely.

I'd also like to be able to 'build in' a flow back of benefits so the benefits I distribute would multiply, a bit like the parable of the loaves and the fishes.

I would not comply with politically correct standards but would implement standards that I would feel to be of the greatest benefit to the greatest number of people.

Anyone in receipt of my beneficence would be accountable to me, but I would engage many to receive their wise counsel, which would comprise some experts but be more mindful of the wisdom of the common man who is familiar with his circumstances and what he could see as most beneficial to himself and his community.

I've managed to turn this into hard work, sorry, it was supposed to be fun.

But I can't wait to get my hands on that lamp ( the one with the genie in it). Isn't this a little sexist, I'd like a male genie, but, what the heck as long as she/he delivers the goods, what's it matter?

katyzzz, I truly apologize, but I left out a crucial part of my question, which now renders your answer slightly askew. I had to modify it, because otherwise b) would be too easy of a choice. Sorry sorry sorry....

Your answer was good though!

Oh, Winston, crying tears, oh Winston, you've cut me off in my prime, and just as I was thinking I'd have to be a hot contender for this one, at this stage, like one on one, oh, the shame of it all, mean cruel man, oh well, what would I expect from a man, they're all the same they tell me. This I've always disputed but now I'm left to wonder, talk about make up the rules as you go along. Hmmph!!!!!!

I know, I know, I apologize again, a thousand times. The rephrased version is really the way I meant it in the first place, but I am absolutely to blame for not getting it right the first time.

I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

Winston,

In my heart, be it Catholic or otherwise, I forgive you my son. And Amen. [not to be confused with Ahmed]

Good post Winston. I'd pick A. I've worked all my life and though not rich, I have enough money to live on. If I could help people anoonymously, I would. I've always felt that is the best way. That's why I give to charities anonymously, it helps the person receiving and gives me a great inner sense of satisfaction. Plus if by doing this, I gain a couple more years of life, that's a bonus.
I like the way your mind works in coming up with ideas for articles. Keep it up.

There is a saying that goes something like

"A True Sefless and heroic deed is the one that nobody else see's"

I'd rather be doing good, than be known for nothing...

So my answer is A

Good answer, ranter. It sounds like you have the sort of mentality for choice A. I think that for a lot of people, though, all of that responsibility and thanklessness would take its toll after a while.

I was a big Spider-Man fan growing up. He was the perfect example of this question. He had these awesome powers, which he used to help humanity, but no one knew who he was. And instead of thanking him, the public feared him, when they paid attention at all. The writers did a good job of capturing the stress of such a situation. But, as the Spider-Man mantra goes, "with great Power comes great Responsibility."

Thanks for your answer

I think that's the most noble answer to give, Mavryk. But, just to play Devil's Advocate for a sec, do you think that doing good deeds (in this case, superhumanly good deeds) with no recognition or thanks or compensation for the rest of your life will wear on you? Choice B gives you all the comfort, love and respect you'll ever need, and these are the things humans crave the most. In Choice B, you do absolutely nothing wrong, you just don't really do much at all. In light of all the respect and love and wealth choice B gives you, do you think that the warm fuzzy feeling from doing good in choice A can compare?

I'm not picking on your answer, just digging a little deeper....

I was a Superman fan myself Winston. I did enjoy Spiderman though, and like you say, people were afraid of him. Batman was great too as nobody really knew who he was. I guess I'm too old to worry about the non-recognition getting to me. But all my life, I've wanted to stay in the background. What I do with my private life is no one else's business. It helps me sleep better.
'In brightest day, in darkest night,
No evil shall escape my sight,
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power,
Green Lantern's light'
Not bad for an old fart, eh? Lol.

super powers, no doubt. I don't want fame... that just means paparazzi waiting for you to get drunk, or wear no underwear.

I think I'd have to agree Cibb. Superpowers would be something you could never buy, not matter how much money you had (unless we're talking about Iron Man-type super suit powers or something. I guess you could buy that....)
