The Human Face Of Iraq

May 1st 2008 08:51
I saw these photographs (and their captions) on the BBC News website yesterday.

The first picture warmed my heart.

The second picture broke it.

A young Iraqi girl poses for a photo after graduating from kindergarten in Baghdad...

...while outside Baghdad's Sadr City hospital, a man grieves as casualties mount in clashes between US and Iraqi forces, and Shia militia gunmen.

Enough said.

Sorry for the swearing, that was just my first reaction...

Hey Tracey, one thing about me-I don't mind swearing. You don't even have to bother with the asterix next time.

Yeah, that was my first reaction too. And that's just one face, one story, one moment.

As the old saying goes A picture paints a thousand words. I think this is a perfect example.

It speaks volumes.

Hi Ruby. I went through a variety of responses to this post, and was satisfied with none of them. So I'll just say that those are effective and moving pictures, and leave it at that.

Tracey and Cheryl, it says everything. Both of them do. Her gorgeous little face with the promise of the future and his heartbreak with the insanity of the present. What a crazy world we live in.

Thanks for stopping in and sharing.

Hi Winston, you and me both. I was going to write a couple of paragraphs about why I found both these images so moving and what they represent, but really, why bother when they do such a good job of speaking for themselves? I think too many words will only dull the sharpness of the pictures.

But it hurts to look at them, it really does.

I don't have a lot to say either... it's interesting how everybody grieves in a different way, isn't it?

Powerful material, Ruby.

Striking images indeed, Ruby....the contrast of hope and despair is intense.

i have a grandmother who recently passed away in Baghdad and i hate to imagine she left the world seeing only bad things and feeling heartache at every second.
