When Is The World Going To Wake Up To Israel?

For many years now, Israel has been claiming that the biggest hindrance to peace is Hamas. As you are no doubt aware, Hamas, which has been controlling the Gaza Strip since June 2007 has regularly been making a nuisance of itself by firing rockets into Northern Israel.
Israel has demanded that Hamas cease and desists these attacks, claiming that 'peace cannot start until the rockets stop'.
Two days ago Hamas appeared to be granting Israel her wish by offering a six month conditional truce. That's six months of no rockets, no raids, no violence. Just what Israel wanted right?
Apparently not. Israel has rejected the offer, claiming that Hamas will just use the time "to re-arm and re-group". Boy, there's no pleasing some people.
Last night, once again under the cover of darkness, Israel launched an offensive into Northern Gaza, just hours, hours after rejecting this offer of peace from Hamas. No Israelis were killed, or even injured in the raid on Beit Lahiya, which left nine Palestinians dead, including a 14 year old girl and her mother.
In all seriousness, how can Israel maintain a straight face when it claims that it is only acting in self-defence? Hamas has offered to lay down its guns and Israel responds by attacking? Again? And of course, its the Palestinians who are dying.
Am I missing something here? I mean really, am I missing something?
